Beginner Commando
CommandoA beginner-friendly Commando build that turns a high-capacity automatic Submachine Gun into a crowd-control machine. Rather than chasing raw numbers, it stacks limb-damage perks so one sustained burst cripples every limb on a target at once, disabling enemies before they can act. Heavy Combat Armor and weight-reduction perks keep you durable and mobile, while critical hits and mutations push damage well past what the gear alone suggests. Tuned for levels 50 to 150 and adaptable to Bloodied or Ghoul variants later.
Damage
High sustained automatic DPS. One burst cripples every limb via Scattershot, Tormentor, and Easy Target.
Survivability
~266 Ballistic / ~276 Energy resist from Heavy Combat Armor at full health.
Boss
Cripples a Mirelurk Queen or Behemoth in seconds to immobilize and safely kill.

Commando
Commando is Fallout 76's automatic-weapon archetype, built around the perk cards that boost rapid-fire guns like the Submachine Gun. It trades single-shot punch for a high volume of fire, letting you shred enemy limbs and clear groups fast. This version leans on limb damage so a single sustained burst cripples a target before it can fight back.

The core weapon of the build. A fully automatic .45 firearm with a huge magazine that lets you pour fire into a target long enough for the limb-damage perks to cripple everything at once. The Large Drum mod pushes the magazine to 100 rounds so you rarely need to reload mid-fight, while the legendary effects keep both damage and Action Point efficiency high.

How to Obtain

The recommended armor for durability without Power Armor. A full set of heavy combat pieces gives high physical and energy protection while keeping you at full health. The Brotherhood of Steel mod pushes resistances to their peak, and Deep Pocketed adds carry weight so you can haul ammo, chems, and food for long sessions.

How to Obtain
Pre-combat buffs round out the build. Company Tea keeps Action Points regenerating so you can stay in VATS and keep limbs crippled. Carnivore-based foods like Deathclaw Rotisserie or Smoked Mirelurk Fillets add carry weight and combat bonuses. Keep a stack of Stimpaks for emergencies, kept light by Traveling Pharmacy.
Combat Strategy
- ▸Drink Company Tea just before a fight for steady Action Point regeneration, which fuels constant VATS limb targeting.
- ▸Eat a carnivore food buff such as Deathclaw Rotisserie or Smoked Mirelurk Fillets for extra carry weight and combat bonuses.
- ▸Keep all five mutations active and locked in with Starched Genes so no bonus is lost mid-session.
- ▸Enter VATS and focus a single limb or the head. Concentrated Fire raises accuracy on each consecutive hit.
- ▸Let Scattershot spread damage across all limbs while Tormentor cripples them, then Easy Target multiplies your damage against the now-crippled enemy.
- ▸Tap the trigger in short bursts instead of holding it, so cripple and critical effects register correctly without lag.
- ▸Against large threats like a Mirelurk Queen or Super Mutant Behemoth, target the legs first to immobilize them, then the arms to cut their damage.
- ▸Once a boss is crippled it can be safely burned down from range with sustained automatic fire.
- ▸In a group, stay in the line of fire so Taking One for the Team amplifies the whole team's damage against the boss.
