Ultimate End Game Melee Build

Up to DateNo DLC
CloudCloud
Max DmgTankyMelee

Cloud built as a self-sustaining counter-attacker around the Hardedge sword's Bloodsucker and Stagger Siphon lifesteal. Counterstance loops shrug off heavy boss pressure while Infinity's End slams the 99,999 cap on staggered targets, and First Strike with Whistlewind Scarf opens fights at nearly two full ATB bars. Tuned for Hard Mode at ~10,000 HP with dual lifesteal Materia for non-stop sustain.

Damage

Up to 99,999 per Infinity's End on staggered targets

Survivability

~10,000 HP plus Bloodsucker, Stagger Siphon, and HP Absorption lifesteal

Boss

Trivializes Moth Unit and similar aggressive bosses via Counterstance loops

Class Breakdown
Cloud

Cloud

Cloud Strife is the party's hardest-hitting melee character. He swaps between Operator Mode for balanced offense and Punisher Mode, which trades mobility for heavy strikes and an automatic counter when blocking. His weapon abilities and Limit Breaks scale on Physical Attack, so a pure melee setup unlocks his strongest single-target damage in the game.

Weapons1 item· 0/1
Hardedge (Mandatory)
Hardedge (Mandatory)

Cloud's highest physical attack weapon and the build's centerpiece. Provides Infinity's End as its weapon ability, plus Bloodsucker for HP recovery on kill and Stagger Siphon for HP gain when using unique abilities on staggered foes. Magic Attack is intentionally low because the build skips magic damage nodes.

Endgame armor for the build because it carries four linked Materia slots, the most of any bangle. The four slots are what enable the dual HP Up plus HP Absorption plus Deadly Dodge stack on a single armor piece.

Whistlewind Scarf (Mandatory)

Combat Strategy

1Phase 1/5
Preparation
4 steps
  1. Equip Hardedge with First Strike Materia, then add Whistlewind Scarf as the accessory. This stacks an immediate ATB head start with an additional pre-fill.
  2. Slot Chain Bangle with HP Up, HP Up, HP Absorption, and Deadly Dodge in the four linked slots so every dodge-attack returns ~250 HP per hit.
  3. Confirm Steadfast Block and ATB Stagger are equipped on Cloud's weapon slots so blocks and staggers both refund ATB.
  4. Use Punisher Mode jump-attack as a gap closer to land the first strike, or open with a Triple Slash from neutral stance.
2Phase 2/5
Core Rotation
4 steps
  1. Open with Triple Slash. Landing all three hits on the same target is the fastest route into Pressure.
  2. Switch to Focused Thrust the moment the target is Pressured. Each cast adds large chunks to the stagger meter.
  3. Layer Counterstance into the rotation as both a damage tool and an animation-cancel for slow basic combo finishers (the third overhead and fifth spin attacks especially).
  4. Use Punisher Mode square attacks when the target is committed to a heavy swing, since the auto-counter routes free damage through Enhanced Punisher.
3Phase 3/5
Burst Window
3 steps
  1. Wait for Stagger, then dump Infinity's End for the 99,999 cap on most enemies and a massive chunk on bosses.
  2. Follow up Infinity's End with a Counterstance or Focused Thrust to extend stagger and squeeze in extra hits before the timer ends.
  3. Save Ascension as a Limit Break when stagger is already locked in. The 11-hit chain scales with the build's stacked Physical Attack and refills HP through Stagger Siphon.
4Phase 4/5
Sustain & Recovery
4 steps
  1. Spam Deadly Dodge through groups of trash mobs. With HP Absorption linked, every connecting hit returns roughly 250 HP at no MP cost.
  2. Stack kills to trigger Bloodsucker for 450 to 500 HP per kill on Hardedge.
  3. Lean on Stagger Siphon during burst windows. Every unique-ability hit on a staggered enemy refunds HP, which is why Infinity's End and Counterstance both heal during their windows.
  4. Drop Chakra as a backup top-up if Cloud's HP dips before the next dodge-attack lands.
5Phase 5/5
Advanced Play
3 steps
  1. Counter Loop: Counterstance to absorb a hit, then press Triangle to enter Punisher Mode and trigger an automatic counterattack, then immediately recast Counterstance. This neutralizes pressure from aggressive bosses like the Moth Unit.
  2. Animation Cancel: Counterstance cancels the third (overhead) and fifth (spin) attacks of Cloud's basic square combo, preserving uptime and avoiding punishable recovery frames.
  3. When the boss is mechanical or weak to an element, swap Elemental Materia onto Hardedge with the matching spell to fold +23% bonus damage into every hit.
