A beginner's guide to Dead Cells for players on their first few runs at 0BC difficulty. Covers the color stat system, scroll and mutation allocation, which meta upgrades to prioritize first, and the movement rune unlock order. These are the fundamentals that separate a winning run from a string of frustrating resets.

1

Lean Into One Primary Color Completely

Dead Cells' damage scaling is multiplicative. Every scroll you invest in your primary color adds a stacking +15% damage bonus to every item of that color. Spreading scrolls across colors keeps your numbers low across the board. Pick one color per run and dump every scroll into it without exception.

2

Pick Max HP When Your Color Isn't Available

When a dual-color scroll doesn't include your primary stat, don't agonize over it. Take whichever of the two off-colors gives you the larger HP bonus. Since your main color isn't on offer, raw survivability is the best available return on that scroll.

3

Match Mutations to Your Primary Color

Mutations scale with how many scrolls you've put into their matching color, so a mutation in your primary stat gets stronger with every scroll you find. Each color has three base mutations tuned to its playstyle. As a beginner, lean on those before experimenting with cross-color picks.

4

Try Everything Instead of Forcing a Build

Dead Cells randomizes what drops each run, so committing to a specific build you read about online will leave you frustrated whenever the pieces don't appear. Spend your early runs picking up unfamiliar weapons and seeing how they feel. Discovering what clicks for you is the actual learning curve.

1

Prioritize Meta Upgrades at the Top of the List

At the very top of the Collector's menu are permanent upgrades that carry across every run. Get the Health Flask upgrade, Recycling, Gold Reserves, and Random Starting Weapons early. These compound over dozens of runs and make each attempt meaningfully more stable.

2

Unlock Items One at a Time

When you spend cells on a new item it enters the item pool and can appear in future runs. If you unlock five weapons at once, none of them get a fair trial. Pick one, learn how it plays, then unlock the next. Depth before breadth.

3

Unlock Items That Match Your Active Color

If you're running Tactics, unlocking a heavy Survival weapon won't give you a useful frame of reference for how it's meant to perform. Unlock things in the color you're actively playing so you can immediately see how they fit the playstyle they were designed for.

4

Skip Outfits Until the Upgrade Tree Is Empty

Outfits are cosmetic only. Every cell spent on a skin is a cell not spent on a weapon, mutation, or meta upgrade that could carry a run. Save cosmetics for when everything else in the Collector's menu is already unlocked.

5

Hold Off on the Backpack and Showroom

The Backpack adds a third item slot with mechanical overhead that new players don't need yet. The Specialist Showroom's main draw is the Hunter's Grenade for farming blueprints, which only matters when your item pool is running low. Wait until you've beaten 0BC at least once before investing in either.

6

Max Out Plus Quality Before Moving to 1BC

The Blacksmith lets you spend cells to permanently raise the baseline quality of gear that drops in your runs. Filling the plus-quality gauge to 100 before bumping difficulty means your weapon levels are already inflated when harder enemies arrive. It's one of the most consistent ways to smooth the difficulty curve.

1

Break the Collector's Door to Hoard Cells

You can bypass the Collector entirely by breaking the door to her room. After your first boss kill, skip the Collector, carry all your cells forward, and invest them directly with the Blacksmith instead. A few runs of this fills the Forge far faster than spending cells on items one at a time.

1

Target Kill Doors, Not Time Doors

After most levels there's a Kill Door that unlocks if you cleared 60 enemies without taking a hit. Time Doors reward rushing. For new players the Kill Door habit is far more valuable: it builds thorough clearing habits, maximizes cell and gold income, and develops the combat instincts that make harder difficulties survivable.

2

Skip Curse Chests on 0BC

Curse Chests offer a colorless item, a gem, and a scroll, but saddle you with a curse that requires killing a set number of enemies without taking any damage to survive. On 0BC the risk of losing your run outweighs the reward. Leave them alone until you're comfortable with the game's enemies and your own damage output.

1

Find All Movement Runes Before Pushing Past 0BC

Runes are permanent movement abilities hidden in specific levels. Collect them in order: Vine Rune in the Promenade of the Condemned, Teleportation Rune in the Toxic Sewers via the Vine Rune path, Ram Rune in the Ossuary via the Promenade, and Spider Rune in the Slumbering Sanctuary after defeating Conjunctivius in the Ancient Sewers. Without all four, entire sections of the map stay permanently locked.
