Use Punisher Mode to Parry and Stagger Faster
Punisher Mode's most valuable feature isn't the alternate attack. It's the block. Blocking in Punisher Mode automatically parries incoming attacks, which deals significant stagger damage and fills your ATB meter faster than standard hits. Switch to Punisher Mode against enemies that resist normal damage or have slow stagger buildup, and prioritize blocking over attacking.
Keep Assess Materia Equipped at All Times
Assess reveals an enemy's weaknesses, resistances, and stealable items. You only need to use it once per enemy type and the information is stored permanently. Many enemies have non-obvious weaknesses that are frustrating to discover mid-fight, and several of Chadley's Battle Intel challenges require assessing specific enemies, so keeping it equipped speeds up those unlocks as well.
Equip Auto Cure Materia for Automatic Healing
Auto Cure triggers a party member to automatically cast Cure on any ally who reaches critically low health, removing the need to issue manual healing orders during hectic fights. ATB costs and MP still apply, so it isn't unlimited, but it frees up a significant amount of attention during combat.
Equip and Level Up Barrier Materia Early
Barrier materia provides a physical defense boost at base level, but leveling it up unlocks the Manaward spell, which cuts incoming magic damage in half. The game deals a lot of magic damage and fights can escalate quickly, so having Barrier and Manaward active lets you focus on offense rather than constant recovery.

Do Side Quests Immediately on Entering New Areas
Side quest rewards here are far better than typical RPG filler, with the best rewards almost always being materia, which is scarce and can't be bought in bulk. Purple discovery markers on the map also lead to useful materia hidden during exploration. Side quests aren't always available once you progress past certain points, so complete them as soon as they appear in a new area.
Max Out Weapon Proficiency Before Moving On
Using a weapon builds its proficiency, and maxing it out permanently unlocks a special ability you keep even after switching weapons. SP for upgrading weapons accumulates on every weapon in your inventory as you level up, not just the one equipped. When exploring or doing side quests, swap to unmastered weapons to unlock their abilities, then switch back to your preferred loadout for harder content.
Complete Chadley's Battle Intel for Summon Materia
Only two summons come from the story. Jesse gives you the first in Chapter 3, and Chocobo and Moogle are found while exploring Mako Reactor 5 during Chapter 6. The remaining four come from Chadley. Every five Battle Intel challenges you complete unlocks a VR battle, and winning it awards the summon materia. You can complete some challenges before Chadley even assigns them by varying your abilities, magic, and tactics in regular fights.

Duplicate Materia and Smash Shinra Boxes for MP
Materia gains AP as long as it's slotted, even if you never cast it. Keeping duplicates lets the benefits of certain materia stack across party members. Don't sell duplicates since purchasable materia is rare and expensive. Between fights, smash Shinra boxes to restore MP instead of spending ethers, as they almost always contain Mako crystals that refill magic points. Heal your party before smashing boxes to get the full benefit of any HP recovery inside.
Buy Discounted Healing Items in Bulk
Items marked in yellow at shops and vending machines are discounted and often significantly cheaper than their standard price. Stock up on ethers whenever you see them on sale. X potions and mega elixirs are worth saving for boss fights where healing speed matters. Keep your gil available for materia, weapons, and accessories rather than spending it on full-price consumables.

Watch Your Party Members to Find Optional Paths
Party members reliably stick to the critical path during exploration. If you head down a branching route and they stop following you, that direction leads somewhere optional. This is a consistent indicator for locating bonus chests and hidden items without memorizing map layouts.
