Try Turn-Based Mode First
Turn-based mode gives you complete control over every action your party takes, making it far easier to understand how abilities, attacks, and reactions interact. You can switch between real-time with pause and turn-based at any point mid-play, so it is worth trying both.
Don't Provoke Attacks of Opportunity
Moving out of an enemy's threatened area, firing ranged attacks at a nearby foe, casting ranged touch spells, using scrolls or potions, and standing up from prone can all trigger a free attack from nearby enemies. Keep ranged characters well away from melee, or invest in the Mobility skill to reduce the risk when they're caught in close quarters.
Use Two-Handed Weapons for Maximum Damage
Two-handed weapons multiply your Strength modifier by 1.5 when calculating damage, making them far more effective for physical damage dealers than dual wielding, where the offhand weapon only adds half your Strength bonus.
Match Your Stat Investment to Your Spell Type
Touch attack spells use Strength for their attack rolls, while ranged touch attack spells use Dexterity. If your caster relies on spells like Acid Arrow or Snowball, invest in the matching attribute to improve your chances of landing them consistently.
Raise Your Tank's Armor Class to 25 or Higher
At 25 or above, most enemy attack rolls will miss your tank entirely. Stack Armor Class through armor bonuses, shield bonuses, Dexterity, and any other modifiers your class and gear can provide.
Give Your Tank and Melee Allies the Outflank Feat
When both you and your tank have the Outflank feat and are flanking the same target, you each gain a +4 bonus to attack rolls. Building your frontline around this coordination makes positioning around a single enemy much more rewarding.
Carry Weapons Made of Different Materials
Many enemies have damage reduction that only specific weapon materials bypass. A Dretch, for example, reduces all weapon damage by five unless struck with a Good or Cold Iron weapon. A varied arsenal prevents you from being shut out of dealing effective damage in these encounters.
Equip Long Spears to Extend Your Melee Reach
Two-handed spears let melee characters strike targets further away than a standard weapon allows. They also apply the 1.5x Strength damage modifier, so they serve as strong damage weapons at the same time.
Pre-Buff Your Party Before Every Encounter
Cast Bless before engaging to give your entire party a +1 bonus on attack rolls. Stacking buffs on your tank's Armor Class and applying other preparation spells before combat starts gives you a significant edge in difficult fights.
Open Every Fight with Ranged Characters
Initiating combat with ranged attackers catches enemies before they can act, giving your full party one free round of actions. Use that window to reposition melee characters, apply additional buffs, or set up flanking.
Take Precise Shot on Every Ranged Character
Firing ranged attacks while adjacent to an enemy, or while your target is in melee with an ally, applies a -4 penalty to attack rolls. Precise Shot removes this penalty entirely. Any character who regularly attacks at range should pick it up early.

Start with a Beginner-Friendly Class
Barbarian, Cavalier, Cleric, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Slayer, and Sorcerer are the most approachable classes. They require less combat micromanagement and let you learn the game's core systems without juggling complex ability interactions from the start.
Build Your Party Around Four Core Roles
A functional six-character party should cover tank, healer, support, and damage dealer roles. Seelah, a Paladin companion, is available very early and serves as a reliable first tank while you build out the rest of your roster.
Manage Encumbrance to Avoid Combat Penalties
Carrying too much weight applies armor check penalties that reduce attack rolls and ability-based skill checks, while also slowing movement. Carry fewer camping supplies, drop spare armor and shields, and buy the Bag of Holding from Gamel Hawks at Defender's Heart as soon as possible to greatly increase your party's carry capacity.
Equip Masterwork Weapons in the Early Game
Masterwork weapons grant a flat +1 bonus to attack rolls, which makes a meaningful difference before you have access to fully enchanted gear. Fitting your frontline characters with them early gives a consistent accuracy boost at low cost.
Max Use Magic Device on a High-Charisma Character
A character with high Charisma and a maxed Use Magic Device skill can cast spells directly from wands. Magic Missile wands are a strong early choice since the spell always hits and scales in number of projectiles at higher wand levels.
Enable Auto Level-Up for Companions While Learning
Letting the game level companions automatically reduces decision fatigue while you are still learning the system. You can disable it at any point, and following the game's suggested feats as a guide even when leveling manually is a reasonable approach.
Lower Combat Difficulty if Encounters Feel Impossible
The game's combat difficulty can be adjusted mid-campaign without penalty. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous involves significant trial and error, and reducing difficulty on brutal encounters is a sensible way to keep progressing. It can always be raised again afterward.
Avoid Multi-Classing Until You Know the System
Splitting levels across two classes without a clear plan typically produces a weaker character than staying single-class. Many classes already have archetypes that blend two class identities, so look for one that fits your concept before reaching for a manual multiclass.

Max Perception on as Many Characters as Possible
Any party member with high Perception can detect traps and hidden loot nearby. Spreading the skill across several characters gives you wide coverage, since only one character needs to spot something for the whole party to benefit.
