Overpowered Hoko & Shield Build
Turns the Hell Rising Hoko & Shield into a walking fortress by opening every fight with Rending Charge, a Mid Stance advance that holds an unbreakable frontal guard while it closes distance and paints your weapon element onto the target. A Guardian Spirit attack layered on top applies a second element for instant Confusion and refunds the Ki you just spent, so the pressure loop never has to stop. Once Arts Proficiency fills, a light attack into a heavy triggers Earthsplitter for up to 80,000 damage and holding heavy chains into Guard Punch to shred whatever survived, all while Grace of Amaterasu halves incoming damage for never dropping below full health.
Damage
Earthsplitter up to 80,000 per hit. 28% elemental weapon damage and 28% melee damage from the double Grace
Survivability
Damage Taken Halved at full health from Amaterasu plus Honda, constant Amrita healing, permanent frontal guard. Elixirs go unused
Boss
Human bosses are stun locked out of Ki and deleted. Level 343 Picture Scroll yokai bosses fall to one finisher

The Hell Rising DLC's new Samurai weapon and the entire reason this build works. A short spear carried alongside a shield, it is the only weapon in the game that attacks and guards in the same animation, which is what removes the deflect timing risk from every other melee build. Any Hoko & Shield base functions, so treat the specific weapon as flexible and chase the rolls instead. The creator flags that a natively Wind-imbued base does almost nothing, so re-roll the element or move to a better base as soon as one drops.
Target Rolls
- ▸Life Recovery (Amrita Absorption)— Mandatory. Every hit under the Extraction Talisman drops Amrita, and this roll is what converts that Amrita back into health. Put it on the weapon before anything else.
- ▸Ki Damage vs. Blustered Enemy— Pairs with the Wind imbue. Stacked with the same star on your bow the creator reaches roughly 21% bonus Ki damage, which is what knocks human bosses out of Ki inside a single charge.
- ▸Divine Grace (Inari or Amaterasu)— The weapon is one of your Grace carrier slots. Re-roll inheritances at the Blacksmith until it lands the Grace you are short on.

How to Obtain
The armor goal is heavy across all five slots, super reinforced with the Blacksmith's Remodel option for the highest possible raw defense. The Hell Rising DLC set is the creator's target because it natively carries Damage Taken While Attacking, which is the only state this build is ever in. No specific named set is required, so build toward heavy pieces that carry the right Graces and rolls rather than chasing one drop.
How to Obtain

The keystone that makes the whole loadout legal. It lowers every active set and Grace requirement by one, which is the only reason a 7-piece Inari and a 6-piece Amaterasu can run at the same time on one character. Remove it and both halves of the build drop a tier at once. The creator's copy rolled an Effect Duration star and he is still farming for a version that also carries a Grace, which he warns is painful to land on this accessory.

How to Obtain
The Hell Rising addition that unlocks the whole double Grace idea. A Picture Scroll can carry a Grace of its own, which is the extra slot that lets a 7-piece and a 6-piece bonus coexist. It also rolls the two effects this build is named around, Ultimate Heart and Ultimate Intellect. The creator farmed the Unfinished Masterpiece scroll specifically because it had already rolled Grace of Amaterasu.
Farming Notes
- ▸The Grace on a scroll is fixed, not random— Which Grace a given scroll rolls is locked per scroll, so re-running the same one will never change it. Move to a different scroll instead of re-rolling the same one.
- ▸Rarity Transfer is the upgrade path— Find a scroll that can become Divine and carries a Rarity Transfer effect, then use it to make another scroll Divine before opening it to reveal that scroll's Grace.
- ▸Save backup method (optional)— The creator notes you can back up your save before a scroll transfer to keep re-testing scrolls without losing the Divine one. This is an exploit rather than intended play, so treat it as opt-in.
How to Obtain

Run two of these. Each one gives Life Recovery on Amrita Absorption 12, so a pair puts 24 into the healing stack on its own, plus 100 flat Life each. Set in the Yang position it also supplies Summoning Seal: Nuppeppo, the huge damage buff this build opens fights with. The creator notes he has never seen a blue or purple version drop, so the Rare version is what you work with.
How to Obtain

The Fire Guardian Spirit and the creator's pick of three viable options. Spirit Force Charge Bonus (Martial Art) is the reason: it refills Spirit Force off the Martial Arts you are already spamming, so you can fire Guardian Spirit attacks far more often than with any other spirit. More Guardian Spirit uses means more second-element applications for Confusion and more instant Ki refunds mid-charge. Its Martial Art Damage and Increased Arts Proficiency Damage bonuses land directly on Earthsplitter and Guard Punch.

How to Obtain
The gear names matter far less than what is rolled on them. Life Recovery on Amrita Absorption goes on every single piece you can afford the materials for, because it is additive and it is what keeps you at the full health that Grace of Amaterasu and Honda both key off. Melee Attack Ki Consumption is the second priority, since Rending Charge uptime is the build's damage. Ki Damage vs. Blustered Enemy on the weapon and bow is what makes the Wind imbue worth choosing over Water.
Combat Strategy
- ▸Cast Summoning Seal: Nuppeppo first for the large damage buff. Ultimate Heart cancels out its Ki penalty, so there is no reason to skip it.
- ▸Apply the Extraction Talisman. Every Life Recovery roll in the build keys off absorbing Amrita, and this is what makes your hits produce it.
- ▸Imbue your weapon with the Wind Talisman, or Water if you prefer raw damage over Ki shred. This also switches on Grace of Inari's 28% elemental weapon damage.
- ▸Finish with the Carnage Talisman for the damage multiplier and the Barrier Talisman for Ki recovery speed and automatic Yokai Realm purification.
- ▸Cast the Fire Familiar Talisman before you engage so its orbs apply Fire alongside your Kusanagi Guardian Spirit.
- ▸Open with the Hellshock Talisman if you want Lightning on the target before you close the gap.
- ▸Enter Rending Charge and drive straight at the enemy. The frontal guard means the approach costs you no health regardless of what they throw.
- ▸The charge applies your weapon element almost immediately, so the first half of the Confusion setup lands before you have thrown a normal attack.
- ▸Against human enemies the Ki damage from the charge alone is usually enough to knock them out of Ki and stun lock them.
- ▸Fire your Guardian Spirit attack while still charging. Ultimate Intellect makes it apply its element almost every time, which puts the second element on the target and triggers Confusion.
- ▸The Guardian Spirit attack also returns your spent Ki instantly, so use it as your refill rather than backing off to recover.
- ▸Re-enter Rending Charge and keep the pressure on. Every pass builds more Arts Proficiency toward the finisher.
- ▸Kusanagi's Spirit Force Charge Bonus on Martial Arts refills Spirit Force off the attacks you are already making, so Guardian Spirit uses come back quickly.
- ▸Once the Arts Proficiency gauge is full, input a light attack followed immediately by a heavy attack to trigger Earthsplitter.
- ▸Earthsplitter has been observed hitting for 80,000 damage, which outright kills most regular enemies and removes a large chunk of a boss health bar.
- ▸If the target survives, hold heavy attack to chain into Guard Punch and unload rapid thrusts while still repelling their attacks.
- ▸Oppressive Strength prevents stagger through the entire sequence while Arts Proficiency is active, so once you start the combo it always finishes.
- ▸Switch your controls to Type B. The default requires holding up on the left stick while attacking, which is inconsistent enough that the creator calls it the single most important change to make.
- ▸Never let an enemy get behind you during Rending Charge. The guard is strictly frontal and rear hits go straight through it, which is the build's only real death cause.
- ▸Use Slashing Gale when you are surrounded rather than trying to charge through a group. Its block timing is stricter, so treat it as an AoE tool and not a defensive one.
- ▸Skip Rending Charge Revenge. It lowers base power in exchange for scaling off attacks you take, and normal Rending Charge stun locks targets so reliably that those hits rarely land.
- ▸Match your Onmyo familiar to your Guardian Spirit's element. Fire Familiar with Kusanagi means both sources push the same element and Confusion lands faster.
