Nioh 3Starter Build

Ultimate Immortal Samurai and Ninja Build

Up to DateNo DLC
SamuraiSamurai / Ninja
TankyMelee

Achieves practical immortality by spamming high-frequency hits to drop Amrita on every connect, which the Nuppeppo Soul Core then converts into health via Life Recovery on Amrita absorption. Pairs Tonfas for infinite ground and air flurries with Odachi for heavy AoE finishers, then layers Unshakable and Oppressive Strength so you can face-tank through boss movesets instead of dodging. The heal loop stops the moment you stop attacking, so aggression itself becomes the heal source.

Damage

High volume over high burst. Aggression sustains itself through heal-on-hit.

Survivability

10% damage reduction while attacking, stagger immunity during Strong Attacks, +5 auto-revives. Basically unkillable while swinging.

Boss

Trivializes most bosses by glueing to them and trading hits through their movesets.

Tonfas
Tonfas

Ninja-style melee weapon used for the build's primary heal-on-hit loop. Any Tonfas variant works, since the trigger is hit frequency rather than raw damage. Look for rolls like Aerial Attack Damage, Backstab Damage, Quick Attack Ki Consumption, or Martial Art Damage to amplify the existing flurry loop. The creator notes 'damage in the air' and high damage rolls are best.

Alternatives

How to Obtain

Any Tonfa variant works for this build. Common drops from Ninja-style enemies and Crucible chests. Trash-tier Tonfas are explicitly viable since the build heals through volume, not damage.
Odachi

Hand Cannon
Hand Cannon

Ranged sidearm used purely as a stat platform. The actual shots are not part of the rotation, but the slot is mandatory because it must carry Life Recovery (Amrita Gain) +2 or +3 to fuel the heal loop. Treat the cannon as a passive accessory slot, not a weapon you fire.

How to Obtain

Drops from enemies carrying Hand Cannons and from chests across the campaign. Re-roll the side stats until Life Recovery (Amrita Gain) appears on the cannon.
Armor2 items· 0/2
Headpiece

Mandatory armor slot. The headpiece is the largest contributor to the build's Life Recovery (Amrita Gain) stack. Push the roll value as high as the game allows for the slot. Any armor type works since the build doesn't care about set bonuses or equipment weight breakpoints.

How to Obtain

Any helm with a high Life Recovery (Amrita Gain) roll qualifies. Re-roll inheritances at the Blacksmith to push the value as high as possible.

Accessories2 items· 0/2
Pleiades Accessory

Accessory used to accelerate the Amrita Gauge charge rate, which compresses the time between Amrita drops and Life Recovery procs. Any accessory rolling the Pleiades (Enemy Killed) effect or general Amrita Gauge Charge bonus works.

How to Obtain

Accessories with the Pleiades (Enemy Killed) inheritance. Re-roll at the Blacksmith if the stat is missing on a base accessory.
Fire Damage Accessory

Nuppeppo Soul Core
Nuppeppo Soul Core

The keystone soul core for the entire build. Grants Life +100 and Life Recovery 12 as a passive, which is what converts Amrita absorption into healing on every hit. Requires 17 Onmyo Magic to equip, which is the only reason the build invests in Magic at all. The Yin-position output is the Rejuvenation Talisman for additional gradual healing.

How to Obtain

Drops from Nuppeppo enemies in Hamamatsu during the 'Headaches' myth mission. Also drops from the Nuppeppo Crucible Wraith northwest of Yasaka Shrine in Shirakawa.

Gear Roll Priorities

The build only needs three specific stats to function. Whatever else rolls is bonus. Pursue these inheritances at the Blacksmith and ignore everything else until the trio is covered across helm, accessories, and Hand Cannon.

Combat Strategy

1Phase 1/5
Preparation
3 steps
  1. At every shrine, brew Extraction Talisman, Power Talisman, and Fire Talisman. Refresh Preservation Talisman charges from Mujina if any were spent.
  2. Apply Extraction, Power, and Fire in sequence before engaging. These three talismans are the standard pre-buff routine for every meaningful fight.
  3. Confirm Nuppeppo Soul Core is equipped and the Hand Cannon and helm both carry Life Recovery (Amrita Gain). The heal-on-hit loop depends on all three.
2Phase 2/5
Opening Combo
3 steps
  1. Samurai opener: dash in with Severing Blade to close distance and land the first hit window.
  2. Ninja opener: launch with Sacred Fire to clear distance vertically and chain Flying Chariot aerial hits immediately.
  3. Pre-cast Preservation Talisman before any boss with high one-shot potential so the auto-revive is armed when you enter the danger zone.
3Phase 3/5
Core Rotation
3 steps
  1. Ninja core: chain Demon Dance ground flurries for sustained hit density at close range. Switch to Sacred Fire to launch and Flying Chariot to maintain aerial uptime when boss attacks sweep low.
  2. Samurai core: stay in Low Stance and spam Ground Sweeper after Quick Attacks. The zigzag sweep covers AoE while Arts Proficiency keeps Unshakable and Oppressive Strength active.
  3. Every connecting hit drops Amrita that the Nuppeppo Soul Core converts into health. Healing is entirely passive through volume.
4Phase 4/5
Boss Strategy
3 steps
  1. Lead with Ninja style to apply relentless pressure and stack Burn from the Fire Talisman enchant. The aerial loop bypasses most ground attacks.
  2. Once the boss is staggered or slowed, switch to Samurai and finish with Dragon Horn for a massive Spirit Force gain and follow-up Strong Attack burst.
  3. If a boss has elemental weaknesses other than fire, swap the Fire Talisman for Wind or Water Talisman before engaging.
5Phase 5/5
Sustain & Recovery
3 steps
  1. Layered healing keeps HP topped up between hits: Life Recovery on Amrita Gain from gear, Nuppeppo Life Recovery 12 passive, Fire Talisman proportional healing, and Backstab Life Siphon from rear hits.
  2. If you do die, the Preservation Talisman auto-revives you with restored HP. The buff is consumed, and active talisman buffs are stripped, so retreat briefly and re-prep before re-engaging.
  3. Traditional Elixirs are unnecessary and can be ignored entirely. The heal-on-hit loop replaces all consumable healing.
