Vampire Survivors builds are about evolutions. You have six weapon slots and six passive item slots, and most weapons evolve into a far stronger form when maxed and paired with a specific passive item, then collected from a chest after a certain point in the run. Knowing which weapon pairs with which passive is essentially the whole game, because an evolved weapon outperforms several unevolved ones by a wide margin. That makes slot discipline important, since filling every slot with whatever appears leaves you without room for the passives your evolutions require. Character choice matters through starting weapon and innate stat modifiers, some of which push strongly toward particular strategies. Arcanas add run-altering rules that can change how weapons behave entirely and are worth planning a run around. Power-ups purchased with gold between runs provide permanent stat improvements. Stage selection matters too, since each stage has its own item spawns and enemy patterns that favor different setups.
