Identify Mimics by Their Wispy Tail
Normal item pickups have a straight tail, but mimic items have a wispy, waving tail designed to lure you in. Check the tail before grabbing any pickup you are unsure about.
Animate the Ground Instead of Fully Switching Realms
When crossing an Umbral bridge, you do not always need to enter the Umbral realm entirely. Using the Umbral Lamp to animate only the ground beneath you lets you cross safely without the full realm shift.
Use Vestige Seeds Sparingly and Keep Two or Three Stocked
Vestige Seeds are purchasable but expensive, and you can only have one active Vestige placed at a time. Keep two or three in reserve at all times and place them strategically rather than burning through them quickly.
Use the Umbral Lamp to Find Hidden Doors and Puzzles
Raising your Umbral Lamp as you explore reveals hidden Umbral doors, puzzles, and bridges that are invisible in the normal realm. Check it regularly as you move through new areas since secret passages can appear anywhere.

Two-Hand Weapons for Single-Target Damage
The developers designed two-handing for heavy single-target damage. When facing a boss or isolated enemy, two-handing your weapon maximizes the damage you deal to that one target.
Dual Wield for Crowd Control and Wide Swings
Dual-wielding produces wide, sweeping movesets that cover groups of enemies more effectively than a two-handed weapon. Switch to a dual-wield setup whenever you are dealing with multiple enemies at once.
Small Weapons Have the Longest Parry Windows
Heavier shields and larger weapons offer stronger defense but have shorter parry timing windows. Small weapons like dual daggers have the most generous parry window, making them a better choice if you are learning to parry.
Dual Wielding With Salts Procs Status Effects Faster
Applying a salt to your weapons while dual wielding buffs both weapons simultaneously for a single use. This doubles your status effect buildup per attack, making dual wielding significantly more effective for applying bleed, burn, or other ailments.
Use Heavy Attacks to Break Enemy Posture
Heavy attacks deal similar raw damage to light attacks but inflict far more posture damage. Charged heavies deal even higher damage and are the most efficient way to break an enemy's poise and set up a critical strike.
Read Damage Number Colors to Gauge Matchups
Red damage numbers mean your attack is hitting a vulnerability, white means average damage, and grayed-out numbers mean you are either underleveled for the area or using a damage type the enemy resists. Adjust your weapon or level up if you are seeing gray numbers.
Single-Tap Dodge to Stay Close for Counterattacks
Tapping the dodge button once performs a short sidestep or backstep that keeps you within striking range. This is the preferred dodge for most combat situations since you can immediately follow up with an attack.
Double-Tap Roll Only When You Need to Disengage
Double-tapping the dodge button sends you rolling far away from the enemy, which is designed for creating distance and disengaging from a fight. Using it to dodge regular attacks leaves you too far away to punish.
Kill Ranged Enemies First in Every Mob Fight
Archers and spellcasters deal consistent damage and will chip away at you while you fight melee enemies. Always identify and eliminate ranged threats before engaging the rest of a group.
Main-Hand Weapon Determines Your Dual-Wield Moveset
When dual wielding, the weapon in your main hand controls what heavy attack and running attack animations you get. Two identical weapons will produce different combos depending on which is in the main hand, so test both configurations to find the moveset you prefer.
Soul Flay Enemies Down From High Ground
Soul Flay can be used to pull enemies off elevated positions, not just push them off ledges. Enemies grabbed from high ground fall to the floor and are vulnerable to a quick follow-up attack.
Free-Aim Wide Attacks When Fighting Groups
Locking on to a single enemy during a group fight restricts your attack direction and prevents wide swings from hitting multiple targets. Unlock the camera when using sweeping attacks or AOE abilities to hit as many enemies as possible.
Attempt Parries Freely Since a Mistimed Parry Still Blocks
Lords of the Fallen is more forgiving about parry timing than most souls-likes. If you miss the parry window, the attack is blocked normally with no extra penalty, so there is little downside to attempting a parry on most attacks.
Follow Up Broken Posture With a Kick or Parry to Stagger
Depleting an enemy's posture meter is only the first step. You must then land another parry or a kick to actually stagger the enemy to the ground and open them up for a critical strike.
Aim Ranged Attacks at the Head for Bonus Damage
There is a headshot multiplier in the game that applies to bow and ranged attacks. When opening on a larger enemy or attacking from stealth, aim for the head to take advantage of the extra damage.

Farm Pilgrim Perch Vestige Enemy for Early Vigor
The Barnacle Head enemy at the Pilgrim Perch Bor Vestige gives over 500 Vigor and can be killed in under 30 seconds. Resting at the vestige and repeating this loop yields more than 1,000 Vigor per minute consistently.
Farm Grim Reapers for 25,000 Vigor Each
The elite Grim Reaper enemies drop 25,000 Vigor per kill. Bringing a cooperative partner makes this significantly easier, as one player holds aggro while the other attacks from behind.

Raise Vitality and Endurance to Expand Your Ammo Pool
Leveling Vitality and Endurance increases your maximum ammunition bar. Leveling Radiance or Inferno increases your maximum Mana. The game does not explain this directly, so prioritize these stats if you are running out of ammo or spell casts.
Socket Umbral Eyes Into Your Lamp for Buffs
Umbral Eyes collected throughout the game can be socketed into your Umbral Lamp at the NPC in the hub. Each socketed eye provides a passive buff, so visit the hub to socket them as soon as you have collected any.

Socket Flat Damage Runes Over Attribute Scaling Runes
Runes that directly increase your damage output are more effective than runes that raise attribute scaling letters. You will need Rune Tablets to unlock socketing at the blacksmith, so start collecting them early.

Restart the Game to Clear Frame Rate Degradation
The game has a known memory leak that causes frame rate to worsen the longer you play in a single session. Restarting the game clears it. Setting the game to fullscreen and enabling VSync also helps stabilize performance.
