Lords of the Fallen builds are complicated by the fact that the game runs two overlapping worlds. Umbral is both a second map layer and a death-avoidance mechanic, and several build paths use Umbral magic and its associated catalyst. Magic splits across Radiance, Inferno, and Umbral schools, each with its own catalyst and scaling stat, so a caster build commits to a school in much the way a melee build commits to a weapon. Stats follow familiar souls-like conventions, with Vitality and Endurance supporting whichever damage stat you push. Weapons scale through letter grades and can be upgraded with materials found in both worlds. Runes are slotted into weapons, shields, and armor to add effects, and rune slots are limited enough to be a real constraint. Ranged options such as throwables and the various ammunition types are more central here than in most souls-likes, and many builds keep a ranged tool available specifically for pulling enemies apart in the Umbral layer.
