Your map has a second side that functions as Artyom's journal, updated automatically as the story progresses. Journal entries often clarify your objectives in ways the main mission marker does not, including warnings to avoid killing, approach stealthily, or watch for secondary goals worth completing.
Scan for Points of Interest With Binoculars
Crest gives you a pair of binoculars when you meet him. Aim them at anything in the environment and hold steady until you hear a click, then a whirring sound confirms the location has been marked on your map. Scanning from different vantage points regularly reveals things you would otherwise miss entirely.
Sleep at Safe Houses to Change Time of Day
Beds in safe houses let you switch between day and night on demand. Night makes you harder to spot when infiltrating bandit camps, while daylight is safer for open travel since mutants are significantly more active after dark.

Check Reticule and Spare Surrendered Enemies
Your reticule turns red when aimed at a hostile and green or yellow when aimed at a neutral NPC. Holster your weapon by holding right on the D-pad before approaching civilians to signal peaceful intent. When enemies surrender during a fight, knock them out rather than kill them, as surrendered enemies never wake up and a peaceful approach is required for the good ending.
Equip Silenced Weapons Whenever Possible
Unsilenced weapons draw every nearby enemy, while silenced versions give you room to work without triggering a full alert. Most weapon types, including shotguns, accept a silencer and you can install one at any crafting bench.
Go for Stealth Knockouts Over Executions
Knocking out an enemy makes less noise than a lethal attack and does not damage your karma. Knocked-out enemies never regain consciousness, so there is no practical downside to sparing them. Enemies who watch a teammate get knocked out are also more likely to surrender, creating more opportunities to avoid killing.
Eavesdrop on Guards to Learn Intel
Enemy conversations sometimes reveal patrol patterns, hidden objectives, or other actionable information. If you hear guards talking while sneaking through an area, hold position and listen before moving on.

Grab Three Essential Suit Upgrades Before Leaving Volga
Before moving on to the Caspian Sea, collect three suit upgrades from the Volga region: the enhanced flashlight battery in the shed next to the safehouse, the metal detector in the small house near the broken crane in the southeast, and the night-vision goggles in the final room of the warehouse. All three improve your capabilities through the rest of the game.
Quick Save Before and After Every Fight
Save before engaging to preserve the option to retry a tough encounter cleanly. Save immediately after winning so a careless mistake nearby does not erase your progress. This matters most on stealth runs where alerting a single guard can unravel a long sequence.

Rely on the Tihar Rifle as Your Main Weapon
The Tihar is the only weapon where you can craft ammo on the go, and the steel balls it fires are inexpensive to make from scavenged materials. A fully charged headshot kills most enemies in one hit, and overcharging the rifle or switching to flame rounds increases damage further while remaining quieter than most alternatives.
Swap Weapon Attachments in the Field
You don't need a crafting bench to change weapon attachments. Open your backpack during any lull in combat to swap scopes, magazines, or barrels between your weapons immediately. This lets you shift between stealth and damage configurations without waiting for a safe house.
Crouch to Improve Weapon Accuracy
Crouching tightens your reticule significantly, which matters most when hitting a target at range. It's impractical when actively retreating from enemies, but for any stationary or cautious engagement, get low before shooting.
Shoot Armored Bandits in the Legs
Fully armored enemies absorb body shots entirely. The only reliable way to damage them is to aim at their legs, ideally from behind with a shotgun. If you can't flank safely, get close enough for a kneecap shot before they can return fire.

Pick Up Enemy Weapons for Ammo Juggling
The game tracks ammo for all four primary ammunition types even when you're only carrying two weapons. Picking up a dropped enemy weapon lets you draw on reserves from a different ammo pool, effectively extending your fight before you need to resupply.
