Switch Between All Three Combat Stances
Don't lock yourself into one stance. Low stance gives you the dodge frames to read attacks, mid stance gives you blocking and balanced defense, and high stance breaks guards and chunks enemy Ki. Swap them on the fly based on what the fight actually needs.
Master Flux 2 for Infinite Ki
Fluxing swaps your stance during a Ki Pulse to recover extra Ki, and Flux 2 swaps twice for an even bigger refund. Properly executed, you can stay aggressive forever without ever bottoming out your stamina. Rush it in the Samurai tree alongside Flash Attack; together they fix most early-game struggles.
Don't Play Nioh 2 Like Dark Souls
Spamming rolls works in Souls games. It gets you killed here. Nioh 2 rewards precise blocking, tight spacing, and stance management. If you find yourself dodging through everything and panicking when Ki runs out, you're playing it wrong.
Pre-shift Stances During Skill Animations
Pre-shifting means swapping stances while your active skill animation is still playing, before the Ki Pulse fires. Your animation finishes in the new stance, you Pulse, you Flux back, and you end up right where you started with full Ki. It's the trick that makes Flux 2 feel seamless instead of clunky.
Stack Two Status Effects for Confusion
Confusion triggers the moment two different status effects land on the same enemy. While confused, they take 50% more damage and stop regenerating Ki, which trivializes the punish window. Water plus any other element nearly doubles your incoming damage, so a Water Talisman paired with an imbued weapon is the fastest path to Confusion in any fight.
Hold Block While You Dodge
If you hold block while dodging in low or mid stance, a mistimed dodge becomes a block instead of a clean hit. There's almost no downside to it. Tap dodge with block held and you get the spacing of a roll with the safety net of a guard.
Break Yokai Horns to Set Up Grapples
Most horned Yokai will lose their horn to a few high-stance heavy attacks. The horn break instantly Ki-breaks them, which opens them up for a finishing grapple. Always check for horns before committing to a long damage rotation.
Use Soul Core Transformations to Skip Grab Attacks
Yokai grab attacks can't connect on your Yokai form. If you see a wind-up for a grab, popping a transformation Soul Core like Ippon-Datara shifts you mid-animation and the grab whiffs entirely. Worth keeping one slotted for fights where grabs hurt the most.

Level All Stats Evenly Toward Thirty
Soft caps at 30 are where most stats start paying off through passive bonuses, so spread your early level-ups across the board instead of dumping into one stat. Prioritize Heart, Courage, Dexterity, and Magic on the way there; they unlock the most useful breakpoints for any first-time build. You can specialize once everything hits the soft cap.
Push Magic and Dexterity to 30 Fast for Onmyo and Ninjutsu
Buffs from Onmyo carry the entire early game. Get Magic and Dexterity to 30 as fast as you can, then lean on Barrier Talismans, Protection Talismans, and Extraction for survivability and damage. Purification Talisman is the first Onmyo unlock you want because it doubles as utility and a steady source of skill points.
Ignore Stat Scaling on Your First Playthrough
Stat scaling looks important on weapon tooltips but it isn't where your damage comes from early. Elemental weaknesses, Confusion, and higher-level gear will outpace any min-maxed scaling stat all the way through your first run. Don't burn level-ups chasing it.
Expend Every Jutsu Slot Between Shrines
Onmyo and Ninjutsu skill points come from actually using your equipped Jutsu, not from leveling stats. Cast or throw everything in your slots before each shrine so the points roll in. Even cheap unlocks like Poison Shuriken or basic talismans count toward filling out the trees.
Awakening Mystic Art Casts Buffs Instantly
Awakening is the Onmyo Mystic Art that strips the cast time off your talisman buffs. Once you unlock it you can stack Barrier, Protection, and elemental imbues on the fly mid-fight instead of pre-casting at a shrine. It's the unlock that turns Onmyo from clunky to dominant.
Equip for B Agility and B Toughness on Your First Run
Agility controls roll distance and Ki regen, and Toughness reduces how much Ki you lose when you block. B in both is the sweet spot for first-time runs because it keeps you defensively viable without forcing a lightweight ninja setup. Pick the highest-defense pieces that still let you hit those two grades.
Skip Set Bonuses on Your First Run
Set bonuses and graces look powerful on the gear screen, but you'll outgrow every set you build before the bonus payoff hits on a first playthrough. Focus on the highest-defense pieces that maintain B Agility and B Toughness, slotted with the highest weapon level you have. Optimization comes in New Game Plus.

Donate Trash Gear at the Kodama Bazaar for Divine Rice
Dump every piece of junk loot at the Kodama Bazaar until you have around 300 to 400 Divine Rice. From there the auto-buy option will max out your healing Elixirs to eight per shrine plus replenish bullets and arrows every single rest, for free.
Sell Tea Sets at the Blacksmith for Gold
Tea Sets from the Hidden Teahouse stack up fast and aren't useful unless you're chasing the cosmetic side content. Take the ones you don't want straight to the Blacksmith. Each one sells for hundreds of thousands of gold and they're your most reliable income stream all game.

Skip Soul Matching Until New Game Plus
Soul Matching scales gear up to the level of better gear, but on your first run the loot table replaces your equipment so often that it's a waste of materials. Wait until New Game Plus to invest. Forging matters even later, around Dream of the Demon difficulty.
