Choose Ex-Cultist for the Spirit Trait

All three starting classes share access to the same weapons, armor, and mods through the Ward 13 merchants, making the starting trait the only meaningful differentiator. The Ex-Cultist's Spirit trait generates mod energy faster, which keeps your abilities up more consistently throughout the game.

2

Max Out Elder Knowledge Trait First

Elder Knowledge grants 35 percent bonus XP and is unlocked by listening to the tape recorder on the desk in the second room on the left of level B2, along the SMG route above. Paired with the Sage Stone ring for another 15 percent, you reach 50 percent total bonus XP. It feels minor on a first playthrough, but in a game built around multiple runs it compounds quickly.

3

Don't Stress Over Misspent Trait Points

Trait reallocation becomes available after finishing the game. Beating the final boss unlocks the Orb of Undoing, which Reggie in Ward 13 then sells permanently for 2500 Scrap each. Early mistakes are completely reversible, so experiment freely.

4

Unlock Sleight of Hand Before Over-Leveling

Sleight of Hand requires 100 kills with each of 10 different weapons. Leveling your gear too high first causes zone enemies to scale upward, forcing you to waste rare upgrade materials on throwaway weapons just to meet the kill requirement. Get 10 weapons and grind the trait before investing heavily in your loadout.

5

Give the Guardian Heart to the Iskal Queen

After defeating the Ixillis, the Guardian Heart can be given to either the Iskal Queen or the Undying King. Siding with the Queen forces a fight against the Undying King but rewards more items overall. On a first playthrough especially, the Iskal Queen route yields the better collection of rewards.

Unlock Drifter Armor and SMG in Ward 13

Right after leaving Ward 13, visit Founder Ford's research room and grab the key card, then break the bookshelf to access a hidden room with the Drifter armor set. Head to the lower ward, use the key card on level B2, collect a fuse from the second room on the left, go to B3, insert the fuse, power on the ventilation system, then cut power again to stop the fan. Pass through to collect the Ward 13 master key, return to B2, and use it to unlock the door to the SMG.

1

Trade Materials Through Multiplayer Merchants

When a player sells a crafting material or consumable to a Ward 13 merchant in a multiplayer session, that item appears in the shop for everyone in the same world to purchase. Use this to share Luminite or Orbs of Undoing with co-op partners, though they still pay the full Scrap price.

2

Kill Friends to Unlock the Suspicion Trait

Landing 10 friendly fire kills on teammates unlocks the Suspicion trait, which reduces friendly fire damage taken. It's negligible on lower difficulties but becomes genuinely useful on harder settings where friendly fire is severe. Only the session host's kills count toward the unlock.

1

Farm Seed Minion Dungeons for Fast Kills

Earth dungeons loaded with Seed Minions are the fastest way to hit the 100-kill threshold per weapon for Sleight of Hand. Each run yields roughly 60 kills and takes four to five minutes, making most weapons completable in two passes. Find a high-density dungeon and run it back to back until the trait unlocks.

2

Master the Neutral Dodge for Faster Recovery

Pressing dodge without a directional input produces a neutral dodge with a much shorter animation and less recovery time than a directional dodge, letting you shoot, melee, or consume an item almost immediately after. It also moves at the same speed regardless of armor weight, unlike the directional dodge which slows significantly under heavy loads. Aiming down sights while neutral dodging allows an even faster animation cancel that can be chained repeatedly.

3

Pre-Damage the Second Ixillis Before It Spawns

The Ixillis boss fight summons a second creature when the first drops to 75 percent health. Before triggering that threshold, there is a hive at the back of the arena containing the second Ixillis. Destroying the hive first causes it to enter the fight at 75 percent health, giving you a significant advantage in one of the most punishing encounters in the game.

Conserve Your Simulacrum for Key Upgrades

Each world biome (Earth, Rhom, Corsus, Yaesha) contains only one Simulacrum per playthrough, giving you four total. Simulacrum is required to reach max level on weapons and armor, and also to purchase additional Dragon Heart charges from the Root Mother. Don't spend it on gear you plan to replace.
