Just before reaching Riverwood after leaving Helgen, three standing stones appear on the road. Choosing the Warrior, Mage, or Thief stone grants a permanent 20% experience boost to matching skills, which accelerates perk point unlocks significantly for the rest of the game.
Marry an NPC for Passive Income and Buffs
Marriage provides a passive gold income from your spouse, food that boosts health, stamina, and magicka regeneration, and the Lover's Comfort buff which speeds skill leveling by 15%. If your spouse already owns a home, it becomes yours automatically.
Join the College of Winterhold for Free Magic Gear
Magic builds should head to Winterhold early. Joining the College provides free magicka-based equipment, access to spell tomes for purchase, and trainers for every school of magic. Entry only requires speaking to the guard at the bridge.
Join the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood for Stealth Builds
Both factions offer strong early stealth gear, access to skill trainers, and excellent quest rewards. The Thieves Guild also unlocks fences who will buy stolen goods without getting you arrested. Either faction is worth joining as soon as you commit to a stealth-focused build.
Join the Companions to Unlock Werewolf Abilities

Faendal is an archer in Riverwood who can be recruited after completing a short quest to deliver a love letter. Having a follower early provides extra damage, an emergency meat shield, and a large extra carry capacity for looting.
Do the Book of Love Quest for Permanent Magic Resistance
Completing the Book of Love quest grants a permanent 15% magic resistance, which significantly reduces damage from enemy mages on any difficulty. The quest requires no combat and involves traveling to the Temple of Mara in Riften and speaking to Dinya Balu.
Explore Off the Main Path Instead of Rushing the Story
Skyrim's side content offers better rewards and more interesting stories than the main quest for most of the playthrough. Wandering toward ruins, diving into caves, and talking to random NPCs leads to gear, experience, and quests the critical path doesn't provide.
Save Manually and Often When in the Open World

Get a Safe Home for Storage as Early as Possible
Random containers in the world may silently delete items stored in them, so only use confirmed safe storage. Anise's Cabin near the start of the game can be taken over for free alchemy and enchanting stations. Breezehome in Whiterun costs 5,000 gold after completing Dragon Rising and provides reliable safe storage, crafting access, and a base of operations.
Use the Transmute Spell to Farm Gold from Iron Ore
The Transmute Alteration spell, found at Halted Stream Camp north of Whiterun, converts Iron Ore into Silver Ore and Silver into Gold Ore. Smelt the gold and forge it into jewelry to sell for significant profit even at low smithing levels. Grab a pickaxe from the same camp to mine ore on the spot.

Progress the Main Quest to Unlock Dragon Shouts
Defeating the first dragon at the Western Watchtower unlocks the Unrelenting Force shout and the ability to absorb dragon souls for future shouts. Completing this also triggers dragons to start spawning in the open world, so build up some combat capability before triggering this step.
Complete House of Horrors for the Mace of Molag Bal
The Mace of Molag Bal is one of the strongest early melee options, dealing heavy base damage while draining stamina and magicka from enemies and soul trapping them for enchanting. Head to Markarth and start the House of Horrors quest by speaking to the Vigilant named Tyranus.
Get the Bound Bow Spell for Unlimited Arrows
The Bound Bow is a conjuration spell that summons a powerful ethereal bow with unlimited ammo. Find the tome inside Fort Amol's prison area, east of Whiterun. It outperforms most physical bows at low level and removes the need to hunt for arrows.
Start the Dawnguard DLC Early for Crossbows and Serana
You can enter Fort Dawnguard through Dayspring Canyon and begin the DLC at level one, not level ten as many players assume. Doing so unlocks crossbows that deal solid early damage and ignore 50% of enemy armor. It also recruits Serana, a powerful follower who cannot be permanently killed.

Pick Up Every Ingredient to Level Alchemy
Collecting flowers, mushrooms, and other labeled ingredients as you explore gives you materials for potions that restore health, stamina, and magicka. Alchemy levels quickly from mixing ingredients and also generates reliable gold from selling surplus potions.
Mine Ores and Craft Gear to Outpace Found Loot
Starting smithing early lets you craft better weapons and armor than most drops at low level. Mine ores and collect animal pelts, then use forges to craft equipment. Stolen crafting materials stop being flagged as stolen once processed at a forge, so smelt or craft them immediately if needed.
Invest in Enchanting to Multiply Your Gear's Power
Enchanting adds powerful magical effects to weapons, armor, and jewelry. Getting started requires learning effects by disenchanting found gear and using filled soul gems. Combined with smithing, it eventually produces some of the strongest equipment available in the game.
