Skyrim builds are shaped by eighteen skill trees that level through use, with perks spent as you level. There are no classes, so a build is a decision about which trees to invest in and, just as importantly, which to leave alone, since every skill increase contributes to your character level and therefore to enemy scaling. Standing stones provide a permanent bonus that can be changed at any time and several are strong enough to plan around. The crafting skills form the well-known power loop: smithing improves weapons and armor, enchanting improves gear including gear that boosts alchemy, and alchemy produces potions that boost smithing and enchanting, and cycling between them produces results far beyond what the game otherwise offers. Shouts are gained through word walls and dragon souls and sit outside the perk system entirely. Because Legendary skill resetting lets you reclaim perk points, long playthroughs can rebuild a character rather than being locked into early choices.
