1

Adapt to Your Situation Every Run

There are no best classes, cards, or relics in Slay the Spire. Every decision depends on the path ahead, your current HP, the boss waiting at the end of the act, and what your deck already does well. Resist looking for universal rules and instead focus on what your specific run needs right now.

2

Target High-Impact Upgrades at Rest Sites

Not all card upgrades are equal. Upgrading Reaper or Claw adds minimal damage, while upgrading Catalyst changes a slow poison strategy into a burst finisher. Prioritize rest-site upgrades that shift a card's function rather than ones that only nudge its numbers.

3

Auto-Take Elite Relics, Evaluate the Rest

Relics dropped by Elites are almost always worth taking since they carry no downside and at minimum won't hurt you. Shop relics require real evaluation against your current gold and deck needs. Boss relics are the hardest choice because every one comes with a trade-off, and selecting the wrong one can derail the rest of the run.

4

Practice With Relics and Choices You Dislike

If a relic or option feels uncomfortable, that usually means you lack experience with it rather than that it is genuinely bad. Taking the Boss Relic Swap from Neow at run start feels risky but frequently produces stronger and more interesting opening setups than the default class relic. Give unfamiliar options a real attempt and you will learn their synergies and limits far faster than avoiding them.

5

Ask How Your Deck Handles the Next Challenge

Rather than planning from floor zero all the way to the Heart, focus on the current act. At any point in your run, ask two questions: how does my deck perform against the Elites I haven't fought yet, and how does it perform against the act boss. Let those answers drive which cards, relics, and upgrades you prioritize.

1

Plan Act 1 Paths for Three Fights Then Rest

At the start of Act 1, look for a path that includes exactly three normal fights followed by a rest site before your first Elite. The rest site lets you pick up a valuable card upgrade going into that fight. Try to include at least two Elite encounters later in the act, as more time spent building your deck makes those fights easier to survive.

2

Path Into Shops Late to Maximize Gold

Gold is scarce early in Act 1, so shops you visit then will have limited buying power. Save shop visits for as late in the act as possible. The one exception is pathing through an early shop to grab a potion before a dangerous Elite fight.

1

Fight Elites for Relics and Gold

Elite fights are your best source of relics throughout a run, and those relics almost always benefit your build in some way. Elites are also more predictable than normal enemies since the pool is fixed to the same three fights per act, and their AI patterns never change in difficulty. Skipping them denies you the resources you need to reach the top.

2

Use Neow's Lament to One-Shot Early Elites

If you take Neow's Lament at the start of a run, the next three enemies you face are reduced to 1 HP. Pathing directly into an early Elite room while this is active lets you kill that Elite instantly for a free relic with no real fight.

3

Build Within-Fight Scaling into Every Run

Enemies gain strength and block as fights go on, so your deck needs ways to keep up. Power cards and skills that boost your stats over multiple turns provide this within-fight scaling. Increasing your energy and card draw is the strongest form of scaling available, since playing more cards each turn accelerates every other part of your strategy.

1

Skip Card Rewards That Don't Fit Your Deck

Experienced players frequently click the skip button on card reward screens. Before taking any card, check what your deck already does well and what it is missing. If a card does not reinforce an existing synergy or solve a challenge coming up in the next act, it will bloat your deck and make your key cards harder to draw.

2

Remove Dead Cards to Tighten Your Deck

Card removal at shops and specific events is one of the most powerful tools in the game. Curses are the obvious targets, but basic Strikes and Blocks that no longer contribute to your strategy are just as damaging to deck consistency. Cutting them makes your impactful cards appear more reliably each fight.

3

Include Card Draw in Every Deck

Cards that draw additional cards are consistently undervalued by newer players. Even when you lack the energy to play everything you draw, cycling past weaker cards increases the chance of reaching your strongest ones. Snecko Eye is one of the most popular relics partly because its two extra cards drawn per turn effectively replicate a draw card without costing a slot or energy.
