A Slay the Spire build is a deck, and a smaller deck is a stronger deck. It draws its key cards more often, which is the most consistently useful principle in the game. Each of the four characters has a distinct card pool that supports several recognizable archetypes, and a good run involves identifying which archetype the early cards and relics point toward, then declining cards that do not serve it. Relics are frequently more impactful than any individual card, and some relics effectively define a run's direction the moment they appear. Potions are underused by most players and are worth spending rather than hoarding, particularly in elite fights. Energy is the real constraint on any deck, so cards that generate energy or reduce cost are what let expensive payoff cards actually get played. Ascension levels raise difficulty across twenty tiers, each adding a specific rule change, which means a deck that clears low ascension can need substantial rethinking at higher ones.
